The WGA Sierra Crush
Date: Third Weekend in August
Every year, the nature of The Sierra Crush seems to change at the whim of the WGA Open. However, this event remains one of the most entertaining on- and off-course venues for the Western Golf Alliance.
This tournament is held at a venue with easy access to both the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas, making it a great destination for a fun weekend tournament. It is also the only event played on the WGA Tour Series that is scored as a GROSS score stroke play competition, making it attractive to the serious golfers in the club. However, the scoring has one unique feature - every par 4 and par 5 hole has a driving competition, and the player with the longest drive in the fairway on a hole gets to deduct one stroke from their overall score.
Though targeted for the third weekend in August, this is the one event on the WGA calendar where the exact date fluctuates to accommodate the timing of the WGA Open. In even numbered years, the Sierra Crush is often overlooked by WGA members outside the region who traveled to the Open, and thus this event can be a good opportunity to pick up some valuable points in the WGA Tour Series points race. However, in odd numbered years when there is no Open, the chance for a weekend jaunt to the Reno/Lake Tahoe area can draw a healthy field.
Tour Series Point Structure:
Champion = 150 points
Runner Up = 80 points
Third = 60 points
Fourth = 50 points
Fifth-Eighth = 30 points
